What Are Spark Clear Aligners?

Spark™ Clear Aligners are a modern clear aligner system manufactured by Ormco — the same orthodontic company behind the Damon bracket system. The trays are made from TruGEN material, engineered for tighter trim lines and improved clarity compared with first-generation aligner plastics. Each aligner is a custom tray designed to move your teeth a small amount — you wear one set at each step of your plan until you reach the final position.

Compared with traditional braces, aligners are nearly invisible and fully removable for eating, brushing, and flossing. They're a strong fit for adults and mature teens who'd rather not spend the next year or two with brackets on the front of their teeth.

Are You a Good Candidate for Spark?

Spark is a strong fit for adults and mature teens with mild to moderate orthodontic concerns — mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and most common bite issues. It works particularly well for adults fixing old orthodontic work that's drifted, or preparing for a wedding, a milestone, or a career change where invisible treatment matters.

Two things determine candidacy more than anything else: case complexity and compliance. Severe rotations, deep bite corrections, and major skeletal work are usually better served by the Pitts21 self-ligating braces we use for complex cases. And aligners only work if they're in your mouth — 22 hours a day, consistently. If that level of discipline sounds unrealistic, fixed braces are the more honest recommendation.

For mature teens, Dr. Thompson weighs both factors carefully. Teens with strong routines do well with aligners; teens who'd benefit from a treatment they can't accidentally lose are often better off with brackets. We won't push aligners just because a family prefers them — that's not how we recommend treatment.

What Makes Spark Different From Other Clear Aligners?

Most patients comparison-shopping clear aligners are really comparing two things: the tray material and the doctor planning the case. Spark addresses the first; the second is what happens at SmileHaus.

Spark trays use TruGEN polymer, which Ormco developed specifically for orthodontic aligners. In practice, that translates to a few things you'll actually notice: tighter trim lines at the gumline (less of the soft-tissue irritation older aligner patients describe), better resistance to staining from coffee and tea, and clearer optics — the trays look closer to invisible in normal indoor lighting. The polymer is also designed to hold a more consistent force over each wear period, which matters because aligners only move teeth when they're applying steady pressure.

None of that makes Spark a magic system. Aligners are aligners — the mechanics are similar across the major brands. What separates a treatment that finishes on schedule from one that drags into refinements is the case planning and the in-person follow-through. Which is the next section.

How Spark Treatment Works at SmileHaus

  1. Complimentary consultation and clinical exam with Dr. Thompson.
  2. Radiation-free 3D digital scan — no impression trays, no goop.
  3. Dr. Thompson designs your treatment plan digitally; you see the projected final position before you commit.
  4. Aligners are manufactured by Ormco and fitted at your next visit.
  5. Check-ins every 8–10 weeks so Dr. Thompson can confirm your progress in person.
  6. Retainers after treatment to hold your new position long-term.

Every Spark case at SmileHaus is planned and reviewed by Dr. Karla Thompson personally — not an assistant, not a hygienist, and not handed off to a remote planning service. Dr. Thompson has practiced orthodontics since 2001, completed her orthodontic residency at Howard University, and is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists. Every check-in visit is with her. That's the part of "doctor-supervised aligner treatment" that mail-order companies can't replicate.

How Long Does Spark Treatment Take?

Most adult Spark cases at SmileHaus run 6–18 months, depending on case complexity. Mild cosmetic cases — minor crowding, small relapses from old orthodontic work — can finish on the shorter end. Cases involving bite correction or significant spacing typically land in the 12–18 month range.

Here's what nobody says in the marketing copy: timelines vary per patient, and the biggest variable is wear time. The 6–18 month range assumes 22 hours a day of consistent wear. Skip wear time and the treatment slows or stalls — sometimes requiring a refinement round (additional aligners) to finish. We'd rather give you an honest range up front than promise a number we can't guarantee.

Spark vs. Traditional Braces — What's the Difference?

A lot of visitors land on this page already half-decided. Let's be honest about when each treatment is the right call:

Spark is usually the stronger choice when the case is mild to moderate, when you're an adult or mature teen who'll reliably wear the trays 22 hours a day, when visibility matters (public-facing work, an upcoming wedding, school photos), or when you want no food restrictions during treatment.

Pitts21 self-ligating braces are usually the stronger choice when the case involves severe rotations, deep bite correction, or significant skeletal work; when compliance with removable trays would be a real obstacle; when you're a younger patient whose growth still needs to be guided; or when continuous tooth control matters more than tray discretion.

Many adults are clinically candidates for either approach — at which point the decision really does come down to lifestyle priorities. That hesitation makes sense. Read more about our Pitts21 self-ligating braces — and why some cases do better with brackets — and bring your questions to a consultation. Dr. Thompson will be honest about which option actually fits your case.

Cost, Insurance, and Financing

Comprehensive Spark treatment is priced per case at your consultation — the number of aligners, treatment complexity, and any refinements all factor in, so a real estimate requires a real exam. Here's what nobody says: aligner pricing in the LA basin is fairly consistent across reputable orthodontic offices. If you see a quote that's dramatically below market, ask why.

We accept most PPO dental insurance plans that include orthodontic benefits — coverage typically applies the same way it would for braces. We work with CareCredit and offer in-house, interest-free payment plans so the total cost is paid over the course of treatment, not all up front. Our team handles benefits verification before you commit, so you'll know exactly what your out-of-pocket cost will be. Full details on payment options live on our financing page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spark Clear Aligners

Are clear aligners as effective as traditional braces?

For mild to moderate cases — crowding, spacing, most common bite issues — modern aligners like Spark move teeth as predictably as fixed braces. For more complex bite work or severely rotated teeth, the Pitts21 PRO bracket system gives Dr. Thompson more direct control. Your consultation determines which is the right fit for your specific case, not a brochure.

How many hours a day do I need to wear my Spark aligners?

22 hours a day is the standard — you take them out for meals, snacks, and brushing, and that's it. Compliance is the single biggest factor in whether aligner treatment finishes on schedule. If wearing them that consistently sounds unrealistic for your lifestyle, that's worth saying at your consultation. Honestly, fixed braces may be a better fit if compliance is a concern.

Can I eat with Spark clear aligners in?

No — Spark aligners come out for every meal and snack. That's one of the main reasons adults choose aligners over braces: no food restrictions during treatment. You can eat whatever you'd normally eat. The only ongoing habit to build is brushing (or at least rinsing) before you put the aligners back in, so food particles don't sit trapped against your teeth.

How often do I switch to a new set of Spark aligners?

Most patients move to a new set every 7–10 days, depending on Dr. Thompson's prescription for your case. Some cases call for slower changes; others move faster. Your full sequence is planned digitally up front, so you and Dr. Thompson know how many aligners total and roughly how long the series will run before you start treatment.

Will Spark aligners affect how I speak?

For most patients, there's a slight lisp the first day or two while your tongue adjusts to the trays. It clears up on its own — usually by the end of the first week. The TruGEN material Spark uses has tighter trim lines than older aligner plastics, which helps. If a lisp lingers past a couple of weeks, mention it at your next check-in.

How is Spark different from Invisalign?

Spark is manufactured by Ormco — the same orthodontic company that makes the Damon bracket system. The trays use TruGEN material, engineered for tighter trim lines (less gum irritation) and improved stain resistance compared with first-generation aligner plastics. Clinically, both systems treat similar cases. Honestly, the choice of provider matters more than the brand of tray.

Do Spark clear aligners hurt?

"Hurt" overstates it for most patients — "noticeably tight" is the more honest description, and only for the first day or two after each new set. That pressure is what's moving your teeth. Over-the-counter pain relievers help if you need them. The discomfort fades fast, and many adults find aligners less disruptive than the day-after-tightening soreness braces patients describe.
